Manchester City will make their Women’s Champions League debut when they host Russian side Zvezda-2005 on Thursday.

The last 32 first-leg match comes four days after City won the Continental Cup final to complete a domestic double, having clinched their first Women’s Super League title on 25 September.

City qualified for Europe by virtue of their top-two league finish last year.

Nick Cushing’s side were unseeded for the draw, whereas Zvezda have history in Europe, reaching the 2008-09 final.

The Russian side reached the last 16 stage in both of the past two seasons and were quarter-finalists in 2010-11.

They won the Russian national title in 2015 but finished second when their 2016 domestic ended in September.

Manchester City and England right-back Lucy Bronze told BBC Radio Manchester:

“Zvezda are a bit unknown but it should still be a good game – they’re in the Champions League, at the end of the day.

“Hopefully we make it through this round – we’ve got this game first before we can look ahead.

“It has been a mad couple of weeks for us [completing the English double but] we have arguably a bigger game on Thursday, in our first Champions League game.”
