TOKYO/SEOUL, Aug. 24, Kyodo

North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile on Wednesday from a submarine in waters off its east coast, despite the country being under tough international sanctions over its repeated arms experiments.

The missile flew about 500 kilometers toward Japan, a distance markedly further than similar launches in the past.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said it was the first case of a submarine-launched ballistic missile from North Korea reaching Japan’s air defense identification zone.
