Leicester director of rugby Richard Cockerill says Australia head coach Michael Cheika’s criticism of England and Tigers prop Dan Cole was “daft”.
England coach Eddie Jones asked to meet with referee Jaco Peper to discuss problems with Australia’s scrum before the two sides meet on Saturday.
Cheika has since said Cole, 29, “has been infringing the law since his career started”.
Cockerill said: “You’ve got to respect Dan, he’s had nearly 70 Test matches.”
The Tigers chief added: “He’s technically very good, stays square, he wants a pushing contest, he’s world class and he’s proved that over a number of years, so I think it’s all a bit daft really.
“He’s world class and anybody that thinks different doesn’t understand the game well enough.”
