Taylor so close to a nine-dart finish

World number one Michael van Gerwen beat Peter Wright 10-5 to set up a semi-final against world champion Gary Anderson at the first ever PDC Champions League of Darts in Cardiff.

Phil Taylor will play James Wade in the other last-four match on Sunday.

Taylor missed double 12 for a nine-darter as he thrashed Robert Thornton 10-2, while seven-time major winner Wade beat Michael Smith 10-5.

World champion Anderson eliminated Adrian Lewis with a 10-5 victory.

Sixteen-time world champion Taylor, who thumped Van Gerwen in the group stage on Saturday, looked at his clinical best once again against already-eliminated Thornton, averaging 108.31.

But his finishing let him down in the fourth leg when, after landing seven treble 20s and treble 19, his attempt at double 12 for the nine-darter landed in single nine.

Dutchman Van Gerwen also showed glimpses of the form which has seen him win 19 PDC titles in 2016, hitting six 180s to send Wright out.
