Yoshihiro Maru broke up a ninth-inning tie as the Central League-leading Hiroshima Carp overcame a four-run deficit to defeat the Yomiuri Giants 6-4 on Thursday night.
Before 45,026 at Tokyo Dome, the Carp — seeking their first pennant in 25 years — scored three times in the ninth to take the lead against Giants closer Hirokazu Sawamura (4-3).
Ryuhei Matsuyama opened the top of the ninth with pinch-hit single. After a sacrifice and a groundout moved pinch runner Masato Akamatsu to third, Ryosuke Kikuchi hit a bouncer down the third-base line for a single to tie it.
